Case Study
Who We Helped
Derby QUAD is a creative hub based in the heart of Derby. QUAD is a cinema, gallery, café bar, digital resource and workshop space that specialises in engagement in contemporary art and film. It focusses on major exhibitions, professional practice for artists, independent film and the creative use of emergent digital technologies. Since opening its doors just over a decade ago, Derby QUAD has welcomed more than 3.5 million visitors through its doors. With footfall like that, it’s imperative that the right Health and Safety procedures are in place!
Challenge
Derby QUAD first got in touch with Kedleston Safety when their Health and Safety officer moved on to pastures new. Instead of recruiting externally, they had an existing team member who was interested in taking on the role but who has no previous experience, just a keen interest to learn! They also required H&S assistance in the interim period.
Delivering full H&S training and mentoring
Helping employees gain H&S qualifications
Conducting regular assessments and reporting at board level
Reviewing documentation and practices
Solution
We devised a training plan to help the existing employee through the process and to sit his NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health) exams to get the required qualifications to become the Quad’s new Health and Safety officer.
Throughout the 12-week training process, we offered help, support and mentoring and were thrilled when he passed with flying colours!
Whilst he was studying to get his qualifications, we also ensured that the QUAD was fully H&S compliant and there were no gaps in their policies and practices. As such we produced the necessary documentation; reviewed fire risk assessments and emergency procedures; and carried out regular inspections. We also presented monthly updates at board meetings; communicated with Health and Safety Regulatory Bodies relating to all H&S operations within the organisation and delivered training sessions to QUAD staff.
The Future
QUAD now has its own newly qualified H&S specialist, so our role has evolved. We ensured that their new H&S officer had fully settled into his new role, and now we are always at the end of the phone if they need any advice and guidance to ensure the safety of QUAD’s employees and members of the public that visit.
